PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM
What started as an after school program in Somerville quickly became so popular that we received requests from several schools to bring it into their physical education programs.
West Somerville Neighborhood School
In West Somerville, 4th graders have worked with physical education teacher Neil Holloway and Police Officer Maryanne Manfra, learning to ride with confidence and with a new awareness of how to keep safe and be healthy.
Officer Manfra notes, “At the beginning of the CYCLE Kids program, the children can be intimidated by me. But by the end, I have a new group of friends! It’s my favorite part of being a Community Police Officer.”
East Somerville Community School
The students in Tim Cronin’s 5th grade gym class in East Somerville have enjoyed the program so much, many of them now ride bikes to school. “My students have gained confidence and feel comfortable learning to ride a bike in front of their peers. This confidence stays with the kids even after they have left the gym,” says Cronin.
Even the 8th graders have asked Cronin for bike riding lessons. Cronin especially loves working with special needs kids and those with physical limitations.
Relationships like these never would have flourished if not for the CYCLE Kids program and our community partners. After hearing our story, the law firm of Breakstone, White, and Gluck was so moved that one of their partners joined our board, and they now donate a helmet to every single child in Somerville. Every year!
