5-Minute Healthy Treat: Trail Mix Bark

This easy, delicious, and fun treat is a great snack or dessert for both kids and parents and includes that famous anti-inflammatory -- dark chocolate. There is no cooking involved, and the chocolate serves as a delicious basis for nutritious foods such as walnuts, cashews, almonds, seeds, and dried fruit.

Trail Mix Bark can also be an easy way to incorporate new foods into your children’s diet. Since there is no baking or complicated steps involved, making Trail Mix Bark with your children represents a great opportunity to teach kids about nutrition through project-based learning. Each child could even make their own unique bark with a different trail mix!


  • 1 bar of dark chocolate (the darker the better)

  • ½ cup of your favorite trail mix

Cooking instructions

  • Melt the chocolate for 10-15 seconds in a microwave or in a saucepan.

  • Spread the melted chocolate in an even layer on parchment paper.

  • Sprinkle with trail mix, let harden, and enjoy!

Note: If your children distrust unfamiliar-looking foods, try chopping the trail mix into smaller pieces, and mix into the chocolate instead of sprinkling on top.
