Upon seeing Justin Schwaitzberg, you would never guess that just a year ago he was entering his freshman year at Milton Academy overweight. When you look at him now, you see a fit, healthy, and very confident high school student. Justin was kind enough to sit down with CYCLE Kids Founder & Executive Director, Julianne Idlet and share how riding his bike and changing his eating habits transformed his life not only physically, but also socially, and emotionally as well.

2012 was a year of unprecedented growth for CYCLE Kids! We’re proud to acknowledge our program has travelled to Georgia and Texas, and, in early 2013, we’ll be operating a new East Boston school. We’re especially thrilled to note that these expansions were made possible by the extraordinary personal efforts of our supporters, proving that passionate people can create meaningful change.

On October 18th, CYCLE Kids hosted our Third Annual – and best ever! – Gala at the Harvard Faculty Club in Cambridge. Once again our community of advocates, bike-lovers, and friends gathered to celebrate the CYCLE Kids mission, raise funds, and share stories – and we were honored by the awesome show of support! In addition to raising money towards Boston- and Brooklyn-based programs, the 150 attendees generously “built” 15 bikes piecemeal through our virtual bike-build wall!

We’re thrilled to announce that our dedicated friends and supporters, Peter Staneland and the Corpus Christi Cycling Club, have raised enough funds to bring CYCLE Kids to their home state of Texas. We met Peter in 2010 when he won a spot on our Boston Marathon team. Inspired by the efficacy of the CYCLE Kids program that so mirrored his own values, Peter and the Corpus Christi Cycling Club raised all the funds necessary to bring CYCLE Kids home to Texas. The program begins on August 17th during the London Independent Elementary School’s physical education classes.

More than 200 cyclists, volunteers and supporters joined us to make this year’s Breakaway Bike Ride the best yet! Featuring three breathtaking cycle routes designed for all ages and skill levels, a gourmet lunch, live music and sunshine, the day was truly a celebration of wellness, vibrancy and community. Bob Wolfe, with his exceptional local knowledge, once again knit together three gorgeous rides of varying length and difficulty through the back streets of Lincoln, Stowe, Harvard, Acton, Concord, Bolton and Sudbury.

In April we hosted our first Bike Clinic, a week-long course that brought together an amazing group of community-minded volunteers, mentors, and students. Each student, working with a professional bike mechanic, repaired several bikes donated by the community -- one of which they kept as their own. The surplus bikes will be sold to raise funds to purchase CYCLE Kids workbooks for the next class of new riders.

We were honored to have six dedicated supporters fundraising for our mission and running in CYCLE Kids bibs in the 2012 Boston Marathon! Their example both supports and inspires our mission, and their passion will help make positive and lifelong changes in the health of our children -- everywhere!
