Likes 4 Bikes

Specialized Bicycles is partnering with local nonprofit CYCLE Kids to help fight the national epidemic of childhood obesity by giving bikes to 4th and 5th graders in the city of Cambridge. Specialized Bicycles’ "Likes for Bikes" campaign launched last month on Facebook: for every 1,000 people that “like” the Facebook page, Specialized will donate one bike towards a CYCLE Kids program that will be given to a Cambridge school.

The CYCLE Kids program is taught in four Cambridge schools but has not yet been implemented in the remaining eight. CYCLE Kids’ goal of 80,000 "likes" will ensure that the children in each of the eight schools are able to participate. The campaign will continue until Nov. 1, 2010. On Nov. 4, the bikes will be presented to CYCLE Kids at their first annual fundraiser, "Celebrating Community Commitment to Eliminate Childhood Obesity," taking place at the Regattabar at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

CYCLE Kids founder Julie Idlet says, “Partnering with Specialized has guaranteed a supply of top quality bikes that children in the Cambridge schools are excited to ride. With the support from Specialized we will be able to get the help we need to give the CYCLE Kids program to every elementary school in the City of Cambridge, impacting the lives of over 500 students in the 4th and 5th grades in just the first year. Working with Specialized will ensure the ongoing success of the CYCLE Kids program as we grow nationally.”

Ian Dewar of Specialized says, “Specialized is proud to partner with CYCLE Kids and to help our local dealers forge a lasting link into their community. Teaching Kids to ride and to live healthy lives is a first start in creating an environment that promotes cycling to everyone. We could not have picked a better partner to launch our Likes for Bikes program”
SPECIALIZED: The Specialized Traction Program was created for one simple purpose: to put kids on bikes. Specialized believes that life is better on a bike and that every child deserves the chance to experience it. Give a child a shot and greatness will follow – whether that’s standing atop a podium or discovering an active, joyful life.

CYCLE Kids is a Cambridge-based organization that gives elementary schools and community centers an innovative, obesity prevention program centered on physical activity and nutrition. The curriculum teaches 4th and 5th grade students bicycle safety and skills, how to make smart food choices, and encourages children and their families to live healthier lifestyles.
