Commissioner Haas Presents New Bicycles and Helmets to CYCLE Kids Contest Winners at the Morse School

June 23, 2010 -- Commissioner Robert C. Haas of the Cambridge Police Department presented new bicycles, helmets, and locks to two 4th grade students from the Morse School in Cambridge as part of the CYCLE Kids initiative. Commissioner Haas is an avid bicyclist and was proud to take part in this event to support CYCLE Kids and the work they are doing to educate children and help them make healthy lifestyle choices.

The "What Does It Mean To Be A CYCLE Kid?" Contest asked participants to create a poster or write an essay answering the question in their own words. The prize was a brand new specialized bicycle and helmet that was awarded to contest winners Brendon Jean-Baptiste and Mikayla Duncan. Both winners come from very deserving families and do not have bicycles at home. In addition to their new bicycles and helmets, Brendon and Mikalya were presented with a certificate from a representative of Senator John F. Kerry.

CYCLE Kids is a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 out of concern for the growing epidemic of obesity and inactivity among children. It promotes healthy lifestyle choices by introducing kids to the joys of bicycling and educating them about bike safety and nutrition. It gives schools and community organizations the curriculum, equipment, training, and support they need to successfully teach the CYCLE Kids program. By empowering these organizations to establish an ongoing healthy intervention program, CYCLE Kids is able to reach many more children than by teaching directly.
