CYCLE Kids and Navajo Nation Grow Together

In 2017, the first CYCLE Kids Program was opened at the Shonto Preparatory School in Shonto, Arizona. Since then, CYCLE Kids has launched two additional programs in the Navajo Nation. The Red Mesa Elementary School and the T’iis Nazbas Community School are also teaching the CYCLE Kids curriculum to their 4th and 5th grade students.

In the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas, Students Put New Bikes to the Test

Oark Elementary School students are having fun and learning at the same time by putting to use bicycles the school recently received from partners of the CYCLE Kids program. "Students took advantage of an early spring-like day to take the bikes out for a spin around the campus," said Angela Kitchen, RN, Oark School Nurse, and Jasper School District Health Coordinator. "Some of the students are learning how to ride," she said. She showed photos of some of the students putting the new bikes to the test.

CYCLE Kids and Navajo Nation: A partnership for better health

The Navajo community has some of the highest rates of physical and emotional health issues in the country. Lack of exercise and unhealthy diets contribute to various physical health issues; roughly 20% of Navajo residents live with diabetes and about 31% are obese or overweight. With unemployment and poverty levels over 40%, the children in the community often face emotional issues that stem from social isolation, low self-confidence, and weak support systems.

Pedal Power Drives Health and Wellness Education in the Arkansas Delta

Do you remember your first bicycle? Do you remember when your mom or dad removed the training wheels, gave you a gentle push and sent you off down the street, pedaling, balancing and concentrating until, finally, the wobbling stopped and you were riding on your own?

That first ride is often the fondest of childhood memories. In that moment, there is a sense of freedom and accomplishment. A challenge has been overcome. The world is suddenly a lot bigger and adventure awaits.
